1. A category of endoplasmic reticulum known as "cortical ER" occurs in the outermost cytoplasm, close to the plasma membrane. The first four screens in this Topic illustrate this type of ER in secretory trichomes of Abutilon megapotamicum. This screen shows a grazing section at a cross wall in the trichome (see 2.1.3h). The cell wall undulates in and out of the plane of section, with plasmodesmata visible in cross section. An elaborate network of ER cisternae, mostly smooth, lies in the plane of section close to the edge of the cell, strategically placed for roles in transport and signal transduction.
