Tympanocryptis pinguicolla is currently recognised as a distinct species within the more widespread and variable Tympanocryptis lineata group (Smith et al. 1999). However, recent mitochondrial DNA work suggests that the Cooma and ACT populations may differ to the extent that two sub-species are present (Scott and Keogh 2000).
Tympanocryptis pinguicolla is the only earless dragon which extends onto the Southern Tablelands of eastern Australia. It is found at higher altitudes and in regions which have cooler temperatures than any other earless dragon. Tympanocryptis pinguicolla is the only representative of the family Agamidae which is restricted to lowland temperate native grasslands.
