1. A group of Spirogyra filaments in confocal stereo view. The upper three have just one helical chloroplast per cell, while the lowermost has three. Gaps at the ends of the helices are where the cross walls of the cells lie - they are not visible. The long cell in the lowermost filament has recently divided, as shown by the severed ends of the chloroplasts just right of centre.
