From ptycho (Gk.: a fold) and sema (Gk.: a standard), apparently in reference to the deeply notched apex of the standard petal

Shrubs; subtropical and mediterranean shrubland, favouring sandy soils

Distinguished from other genera in Bossiaeeae by the imparipinnate leaves with opposite leaflets
